Practical power systems range in size from about 16,000 buses for the western interconnection to about 75,000 buses for the eastern interconnection. Upcoming high performance computing-based power system solutions can be applied to such large sized systems to show the benefits compared to standalone processor based solutions. However, due to the sensitivity of the data for real systems, these cases generally come with tight restrictions on both access to the data as well as publication of results. It is imperative to develop open source power system cases of similar size that can be accessed by the research community. As part of the GridPACK software development, several large scale power system cases ranging from 5300 – 68000 buses have been developed. These cases have been created using base data extracted from the IEEE 300 bus and Polish summer peak cases, available from the MATPOWER case library, and are designed to mimic the properties of large, realistic networks while being freely accessible to all researchers.

Case Development:

These use cases have been developed by Mallikarjuna Vallem at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The base data for the synthetic cases is taken from two open source cases, both from the MATPOWER library: (1) IEEE 300 bus case and (2) Polish summer peak case. The process of development of the larger cases is as follows:

  • Multiple variants of the IEEE 300 bus and Polish cases have been developed by randomizing the lines, bus numbers and loads. This allows the generation dispatch, power flow in each of the variants.
  • These cases are considered to have been geographically spaced as individual areas, as shown below. Adjacent areas are then joined by tie-lines.


  • Generation and load in each of the areas are scaled and generation is redispatched based on a predetermined criterion to allow practical flows between areas.
  • In the larger interconnected systems, a single slack bus is chosen and other generation buses are changed to non-slack PV buses (type 2 buses in PTI format).
  • Reactive power is adjusted at some buses and loads to ensure the resulting system has a voltage within the range of 0.9 – 1.1 p.u.

Case Description:

  • The polish summer peak case has voltage levels of 110, 220 and 400 KV. The final cases developed are consistent with the IEEE 300 bus case which has voltage levels of 115, 230 and 345 KV.
  • Bus names are changed to reflect the bus numbers i.e. for a bus number 11285, the corresponding bus name is ‘B11285’.
  • The archive has a total of 29 cases all in PTI raw format version 33.
  • The largest case ‘Case68125.raw’ has 68125 buses, a total of about 570 GW of load and about 580 GW of generation dispatch.
  • The smallest case ‘Case5380.raw’ has 5380 buses, a total of about 36,149 MW of load and about 36,829 MW of generation dispatch.
